We Are All Dust

No matter who we are, no matter how great,
We may think, forge and create
We persevere and we sweat
To climb higher heights yet-
To satisfy the ego
Oh no, no no:-
We are dust;
We are all dust.

Our arrogance and pride
Makes Man wholly blind
To the fact that in the end
Nature will of course win:
Long after we are earth
Her touch smothers – Nature’s continuing birth,
Our memorials are dust;
We are all dust.

Oh arrogance! Sheer folly of man!
We may beat back Nature in living hands-
In the end we return to the land,
All of us, great and small, black or white Man
And Buildings rot and tumble
As Nature takes over concrete crumbles
The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth
We are all dust.

  1. “Our arrogance and pride Makes Man wholly blind To the fact that in the end Nature will of course win”……… Very true and wise words…… man will never win over nature… And despite all our material gains.. we take nothing back across the divide with us… We are all but dust!….
    Great poem Heidi … ~Sue

  2. This is beautiful. Earthy. Real.

    • Very earthy! In a weird way, or perhaps not, it gives me comfort to think like this – that Nature will always reclaim what we have stolen, that we go back to Nature, one way or another, in the end.

  3. Your mojo is back and it reflects in your beautiful prose.

  4. Beautiful message, as we shall all turn to dust when our spirit leaves their cell! But what a wondrous day shall come when happiness will reign in our new spiritual bodies! God bless my sister!

  5. What a down to earth piece to read as I venture into my own writing today — I do feel my meek existence on this earth, in this universe. I accept this.

I know I will become dust, but I also know that I am made from the same stuff as the earth, the universe — I am right now a sentient life, a being who lives.

I intend to live fully and well and happily each moment, despite, and perhaps because of, the knowing of what I will become.

    • Make the most of life for it won’t last forever – but is the greed, arrogance, and pride of certain of our species that seem to blind to the fact that one day, they too – and all their efforts, will be dust. As you say, life is about enjoyment and fulfillment – not leaving prideful, vain legacies!

      • Yes, there are beings among us who get a little caught up in the drama, maybe the ego too, eh?

  6. Lovely poem, Heidi! Indeed, we arrive with nothing in our hands and we leave with empty hands. Only what is in the heart prevails – love!

    Blessings ~ Wendy

  7. Great reminder that Gaia is alive and will always prevail over humankind.

  8. Very nice and very true. No matter who we are, we all start out the same way.

  9. So much truth in this poem. Good job!

    • πŸ™‚ Yes, I always try and write the Truth, as I see it. It’s the only way I can write!
      Thanks Uzoma.
