The Burial Ground

Cemetery Pond

Cemetery Pond (Photo credit: Mr. Ducke)

You are gone now;
Where I cannot follow,
Though I would if I could,
With my heart lying fallow.

Your spirit is free,
To soar where it will,
Mine is gagged and bound
To this earth still.

Do you envy me the earthly pleasures?
I envy you Spirit’s undiscovered treasures.
But I must stay, chained and bound:
You and I are the same
At the burial ground.

  1. I do not fear death and I hope when my partner goes or vice versa, we can feel as the verse says. We have had a wonderful life together.

It is when death is painful and so tragic that the thoughts must be unbearable.
It is good that poets can express these feelings whether wonderful or unbearable.

    • Poetry has been my saviour: I never knew how to express my ‘angst’ except through writing… writing it down was like a release; freeing the feeling and lifting the burden. And now I write for the joy of writing 🙂

  2. What I took from this write was a bit of the ‘green pasture’ theory…I could be wrong of course…but it’s a striking photo and an excellent write…and I did most thoroughly enjoy the reading…
    Rachael 🙂

    • Thank you Rachael 🙂 It wasn’t so much ‘green pasture theory’ – although this is the beauty of writing: that each person interprets it in a unique way, which I love. If that’s what you take from it, then I’m glad my writing has reached out to you.
For me, it was more about body vs spirit: how well do you live life? The last lines ‘We are the same at the burial ground’ is someone who is virtually dead in spirit, reaching out to someone who has flown in spirit 🙂

Sometimes it feels like to live is to die, and to die is to live.

    Who knows…?
