Are Writers Different?

A friend of mine sent this to me, and it certainly resonates with me… I’m interested to see what you think about this:

I read this in Isabel Allende‘s Mi País Inventando (My Invented Country), one of her non-fiction, mostly autobiographical works, and found it interesting:

She says that once she heard a famous African-American writer (she didn’t name her) say that since she was a child she had always felt an outsider in her family and her town. She (the African-American writer) added that almost all writers feel this, even if they have never left their hometown. To feel this is inherent in a writer; without the [uneasy] feeling of being ‘different’ there is no need to write.

  1. Thank you for this intriguing post! I felt like the misfit of the family and the scapegoat at times. Mom said I thought too much. Now that I blog and write poems more than I had been… I feel thankful for my personality. I am enjoying my serious and silly sides more than ever.

    • Good to hear – the world needs more silliness, I think… and I think each of us as individuals benefit from having, and expressing, our different parts/aspects. That’s what I love about writing – the ability to express whichever side or part of you is wanting to come out 🙂

  2. That’s a good point… I wonder if there is a ‘bigger’ or more (dare I say it?!) temperamental feeling of being different in writers?!

  3. I’ve thought about this… I suppose that most people feel that they are different in some way. What makes the spirit of the writer (as well as the spirits of some others) different is that they don’t feel the need to conform to others. They don’t feel ‘I’m different, but I wish I was like everyone else.’ They’re more like, ‘I’m different, and I’ve got something to say about it.’

  5. Very true. That’s the imaginary world we all as writers create. For one to be termed a good writer/poet/storyteller, s/he must be able to transport her audience sweetly and safely to wherever the ‘meat’ is. Thanks for putting this up. It’s reassuring to all of us on the journey to creating something. We’re not alone.
