The Ballad of the Faeries’ Gift

A faun, as painted by Hungarian painter Pál Sz...

I had a dream upon a starry night
Which did seem wondrous to me,
I have the urge to tell its tale
And share its comedy.

Dainty ghost-like on a horse
Towards a hill I rode
And cresting the top I did espy
A folktale creatures’ abode.

Faeries flew and satyrs leapt
And fauns did flirt with fays
Whilst in the midst Pan a-sat
And on his pipe a-played.

Silent foot I gentle creep’d
Closer to their den
To better see their merriment
And feel a child again.

O mishap! O clumsy foot!
A faery nearby heard
My loud and mistaken betrayal –
And to Pan she deferred.

But! Instead of shying away from me,
Pan elegant stood
And beckoned me to join his folk
And his party in the woods.

All a-nervous all a-flutter
Shyly towards him I came,
And kneeled before this awesome Pan
In honour of his domain.

With laughing eyes he stood me up
And told me I was one
Of the faery folk; he saw in me
A daughter of the sun.

With flowers did fauns and faeries wreath me
And I danced to their merry tune
Then wings appeared on my back
And I was born anew.

A faery, a sister of the land
I whirled and sang and played
And understood Nature’s seasons
As Crone, Mother, Maid.

A child’s dream, a fantasy,
But in my heart so true;
This was where I really belonged
Among the natural.

The end of my dream I’m sorry to say
Eventually had to come,
But when I awoke in broad daylight,
Pan’s pipes still sung.
