So what do you want to be when you grow up?

Remember that question? It seems that every child is asked that at some point in their young life. And I’m pretty sure most answer ‘an astronaut’; ‘a fairy’; ‘a pirate’; ‘big!’ and other such innocent childhood dreams. At 5 years old, my answer to this question was – an author. It is the only thing I have ever wanted to do. The only thing that has been a constant passion throughout my life.

Yet it hasn’t happened (yet!) Why? If this is the thing I love, that drives me, inspires me, then why have I not achieved my childhood dream?

It is so easy to let life pass us by, to think ‘tomorrow I’ll get this done’ or ‘I just need to do this first’ or ‘but I work so hard I just want to relax and don’t want to have to think…’

We make so many excuses to ourselves, and before we know it – blink, zoom. Constant motivation, time, money and confidence. These are all the obstacles I have yet to overcome. And it would be easy to carry on making excuses. ‘I have a family.’ ‘I’m not as good as the published authors, my work will never be able to compete’ and so on and so forth.

The truth is, it is our self that is the obstacle. Nothing stands in my way but me. Nothing stops you achieving your goal but you. So keep on writing (or singing, or creating art, or whatever beautiful thing it is you do). Don’t worry about other people. Don’t let life draw you into her current of sweet oblivion. Make time for yourself. Be proud of yourself. Because the best thing in the world is to be able to look back at the last part of your life with a proud smile, a proud heart, and a happy soul.
